There are 181 piers installed to support the base to expand the Barbara Jordan Terminal at the Austin airport and 20 more remain to be completed as construction continues on the 9-gate terminal expansion at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Anchoring 70-80 feet deep, the drilling, building of cages and concrete pours for the remaining piers continues to move forward. Pier cap placement, slab on grade, grade beams and underground utility work continues to prep the site to enter its next construction stage and the erecting of steel.
Two heavy lifting tower cranes join airport skyline
As the concrete piers are being anchored to support the frame work of the new 9-gate terminal expansion, two construction tower cranes hover over the enclosed construction site.
The two cranes, 170 feet and 190 feet each in height, are visible to passengers, temporarily joining the control tower as part of the airport sightlines. The two cranes will be used during the entire construction period and for the 9-gate terminal expansion.
