Lot A closes for construction of new six level parking garage
Lot A at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is closed for the construction of a new six level parking garage. The new structure will provide 6,000 covered parking spaces within walking distance of the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
The $250 million project to be built in the existing Lot A location includes:
The parking garage
Aviation administrative building for staff and lease space
Upgrades to signage along Presidential Blvd.
New entry plazas to the parking lots, garages and to the Rental Car Facility
Enlarging and upgrading the north exit plaza to meet the demands of the expanded parking operations.
The new two-million square foot garage was approved for financing and construction by the Austin City Council on March 23, 2017. The council approved PGAL as the project architect that is leading a team of specialized consultants and Austin Commercial as the contractor. The garage is scheduled to be completed in 2018 and the administrative building in 2019.
The new admin building will consolidate Aviation staff and functions that are currently operating in different locations at the airport. This will make more space available inside the Barbara Jordan Terminal for passenger amenities and lounges.
The Lot A area accommodated 1,021 parking spaces but will increase to 6,000 with the completion of the new garage. Under ABIA Parking there are 3,205 garage parking spaces available with 7,268 economy spaces in surface open lots B-G. There are 1,270 spaces available for overflow at the economy rate that opens when all lots are full.
ABIA Parking is managed by SP Plus Corp and offers several convenient parking options with Family Friendly Valet and Executive Valet services. There is also a Free Cell Phone Lot to wait for arriving passenger pickups and drop offs on the airport grounds. More airport parking information can be found at www.abiaparking.com and passengers can follow on Twitter for parking updates @ABIA_Parking.
Airport to get new front doors with vestibule replacements
As part of the airport's overall improvement project, the primary entry and exit vestibules to the Barbara Jordan Terminal are being replaced and updated.
The airport vestibules act as an airlock between the outside and inside environments. They aid in reducing cold and hot air drafts and to reduce energy costs due to air-conditioning and heat loss.
The demolition and construction to each of the 13 vestibules located in upper level ticketing and in the lower-level baggage claim will be done in phases to limit impact to passenger traffic entering and exiting the terminal.
Contractor Hensel Phelps is estimated to complete the vestibule replacements in December 2017.
