It’s our organization’s mission to make Austin the best-managed City in the country.
I’m often asked what this really means and how it can be implemented. My answer: it’s our job to figure that out. Rather than looking to other municipalities for ideas, practices and policies that work, why not become the innovator?
My vision is to make Austin the city everyone’s talking about – so others will look to us for best-practices, innovation and inspiration. Thus, instead of working toward benchmarks, we are the benchmark.
Implementing this vision falls on the shoulders of individuals working in the City organization. For example, how is each police officer making Austin the safest city in the country? What is each clerk in the Law department doing to make Austin a Best-Managed organization?
Austinites share a sense of community pride and a determination that the City’s vision of making Austin the most livable City in the country is not just a slogan, but a reality. The community came together to provide more than 18,500 ideas and contributions to help shape Imagine Austin, our 30-year plan for the future.
Additionally, our results of the 2012 Community Survey show that Austin residents rate Austin’s city services high, especially when compared to other large cities. Austin rated at or above the national average for large cities with populations over 250,000 in 78 percent of 46 service areas assessed. Austin’s rankings reflect a City government that keeps its vision in the forefront while planning for the future.
The values that help shape Austin reflect the PRIDE that City employees have in their organization:
