Join us for an afternoon with author Michelle M. Mears where she will speak about her extensive research on African-American Freedman Communities and sign copies of, “And Grace Will Lead Me Home: African-American Freedmen Communities of Austin, Texas 1865-1928.” A book signing will commence after the formal presentation.
About the Author
Michelle Mears currently serves in the capacity of Archivist at University of North Texas. She received her master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Texas, a master’s degree in History from Baylor University, and is a long-time member of the Academy of Certified Archivists.
A native of Austin, Ms. Mears has been researching and writing about Austin’s historic freedmen communities since
2000; a topic she became interested in while working on a master’s thesis.
“And Grace Will Lead Me Home” is a part of a series of upcoming programs designed to introduce the community to the Carver’s new core exhibit “The African American Presence in 19th Century Texas” that will open in early 2020.
