The Austin Police Department Emergency Communications Division has spent this National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (April 8 – April 14, 2018) highlighting the telecommunicator culture and industry. The annual event, celebrated the second week of April, honors the thousands of men and women who receive 911 calls, dispatch first responders, and provide life-saving assistance to citizens.
The week has been filled with daily themed events recognizing 911 call takers, dispatchers and Fire/EMS operators at the Combined Transportation Emergency Communications Center (CTECC). The Austin Police Department has also featured 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers in social media posts to bring awareness to the vital tasks both perform.
This week’s tribute to these unsung heroes behind the phones will culminate in a Family Day to be held tomorrow, Saturday, April 14, 2018. During the event, APD Communications employees can bring their families and visit with various other APD units including SWAT, EOD K-9 (Bomb Squad), Mounted and Lake Patrols, and Motor Units. Austin-Travis County EMS and the Austin Fire Department will also have displays.
