On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, officers of the APD Organized Crime Division stopped a 2008 Pontiac SUV in the 14300 block of South IH-35 for speeding. While speaking with the driver, Reymundo Bustamante, the officers picked up on a number of clues using their training in drug trafficking technique recognition that led them to believe the driver may be smuggling illegal narcotics.
After further investigation, APD K9 “Cuatro” positively alerted on the vehicle leading officers to discover approximately 93 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the SUV’s gas tank and tires. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is over $1.6 million.
Bustamante, a 22-year-old resident of Laredo, Texas, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison and a $10,000 fine.
This case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s office for further review.
