Deceased: Devonte Ortiz, Black male, born 02-27-1999
On Wednesday, July 4, 2018, Austin 9-1-1 received a call of a disturbance with a gun between two men. The call was then updated stating one of the males had been shot. Upon arrival, Austin Police officers observed Devonte Ortiz with obvious trauma to his body. Officers immediately began CPR until Austin-Travis County EMS arrived. A/TCEMS transported Ortiz to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. However, Ortiz was pronounced deceased at 2:12 a.m. by Dr. Brown.
Austin Police Homicide investigators arrived at the scene. Witnesses were conducted and the scene was processed for evidence. Detectives were able to obtain video that shows a portion of the incident. Witnesses and the video indicate the disturbance between the two men began because fireworks were being ignited in the apartment complex parking lot. The argument broke off but started again later when the fireworks continued. The second argument escalated to the point that both men displayed firearms. Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene. The two men were previously acquainted with each other.
The Travis County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy tomorrow morning.
This case will be referred to the Travis County District Attorney’s office for review and possible presentation to the Grand Jury. No arrests have been made at this time.
