Suspect / Deceased: John Edward Litchfield II, White male, born 05/31/1990
On Thursday, September 27, 2018, Austin 911 received a call of a shooting. Upon arrival, Austin Police officers found Matthew Fernander with obvious trauma to his body. A roommate of the victim immediately began CPR until EMS arrived. Austin-Travis County EMS transported Fernander to St. David’s South Austin Hospital. Matthew Fernander succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased at 8:59 p.m. by Dr. Evans.
Austin Homicide investigators arrived at the scene. Interviews of witnesses were conducted and the scene was processed for evidence.
The Travis County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy this morning and ruled the cause of death as a gunshot to the head and the manner of death a Homicide.
Homicide detectives have developed a suspect and believe this was an isolated incident with no ongoing public safety threat to the community.
On September 28 at 6:06 a.m., homicide detectives responded to a suicide call at the Penny Backer Bridge. They discovered that the decedent was the primary suspect from the Fernander murder case. The suspect was identified as John Edward Litchfield II.
Litchfield was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Patrol officers located and recovered the vehicle that Litchfield had been driving. Homicide detectives have linked evidence to Litchfield, that they believe was involved in the murder. Detectives have submitted DNA and ballistics evidence for confirmation.
