The focus of the Veterans Park project is to relocate and enhance the exhibition of three war memorials, originally located at Waterloo Park, to the existing Veterans Park. The intent of the proposed design will create a setting for the monuments that expresses a respectful and peaceful sense of place.
Veterans Park is located at the intersection of Atlanta and Veterans Drive, adjacent to the American Legion. In the fall of 2011, in preparation for the development of Waller Creek Tunnel \ Inlet Project at Waterloo Park, the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) removed the following memorials from Waterloo Park - The Vietnam and Korean War Memorials and the Hostile Action in Beirut Memorial. The memorials were removed early in the construction from Waterloo Park to avoid any damage to the monuments while the inlet\bypass tunnel and other improvements were constructed and completed. The monuments are currently safely stored at the Parks and Recreation Department Fiesta Garden Maintenance yard. The 2012 Bond initiative provides the funding to design a space for these memorials and future memorials at Veterans Park.
