The Austin Parks and Recreation Department will begin preparations for construction on the Zilker Café Rehabilitation Project (2133 William Barton Drive) on Friday, February 15, 2019. Construction is anticipated to be completed in the Fall of 2019. William Barton Drive is not expected to be closed during the construction phase, but portions of the parking lot will have closures during this time.
The Zilker Café Rehabilitation project consists of a complete rehabilitation of the building beginning with demolition of exterior and interior elements, except for the slab and masonry façade. Electrical, mechanical and plumbing improvements will include new service connections and new systems to meet current codes. The new roof configuration and restored facades based on the currently proposed exterior improvements have received approval from the Historic Landmark Commission of the City of Austin.
Zilker Café plays a significant role as an additional recreational amenity for the comfort and enjoyment of visitors to Zilker Park. Providing food and beverage services helps promote the use of the many recreational opportunities at the park including swimming, hiking, picnicking and canoeing. The concession also has historic ties to the community, holding a cherished place in the memory of generations of park visitors.
