Animal Protection serves the community by defending threatened animals from abuse or neglect, working closely with law enforcement to contain or help aggressive animals, assisting other agencies with wildlife such as coyotes, deer, bats and rodents, and ensuring that City ordinances related to animal welfare are followed.
Foster care takes vulnerable and at-risk pets out of Austin Animal Center and places them into temporary homes.
Visit the Austin Animal Center to look for your lost pet as soon as possible. Due to the large number of animals, some may be held for only three days or less after intake. Please visit the shelter at least every other day to check for your lost pet.
In addition to the volunteer, adoption and foster programs, Austin Animal Center has developed a strong Rescue Partner program by working with more than 130 rescue partners. These organizations network with the shelter on a regular basis and work diligently to help our pets find the perfect new homes they deserve. Approximately 34% of animals in the shelter are transferred to approved rescue partners. The participation of our partners is vital to Austin Animal Center’s live outcome goals.
Austin Animal Center in partnership with Emancipet, provides free and low cost services to the community through mobile clinics such as spay/neuter surgery, microchips, ID tags, and rabies vaccinations (only citizens of Austin and Travis County qualify).
Animal Services has numerous programs and partnerships designed to help pets in the shelter, in the community, and at home. Your donation will be used to provide these pets the extra attention and care they need and deserve.
Austin Animal Center asks that owners exhaust all options before deciding to bring a pet to the shelter. Check with family, friends, coworkers and other rescue organizations, or advertise your pet for adoption.
Many opportunities exist for citizens to help Austin Animal Center. Depending on your interest, skill set, availability and reason for wanting to help, there is a place for you – whether at AAC, at home, in the community, or with one of our Partner Agencies.
